David Oistrakh was born in Odessa in 1908 and became one of the greatest violin legends of the 20th century. In 1946 Prague was one of the first destinations of his post-war foreign tours. Since then he has returned to the city repeatedly as a violinist and conductor. With his technical mastery and beautifully warm tone, Oistrakh has become an unsurpassed interpreter of the great Romantic concertos. An example is Brahms' Concerto in D major, a work of extraordinary technical difficulty, recorded in Prague with the Czech Philharmonic under Antonio Pedrotti. However, true mastery is often evident even in seemingly simple classical repertoire; the clear structure and straightforward melodicism demand from the performer stylistic purity as well as balance and culture of tone. It is these qualities that characterise Oistrakh's recording of Mozart's Third Violin Concerto and Beethoven's Romance, Op. 50, made in 1954 with Karel Ančerl, conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, already a world-renowned virtuoso. For this release, the legendary recordings have been remastered from the original tapes.
