In November '68 Miles increased the number of multi-keyboard sessions; his cursory instructions reflected the radical return to modal minimalism of "So What" and "Flamenco Sketches" (No. 10). In February '69, Miles returned to this style, adding guitarist John McLaughlin. The recordings ran at the beginning of the piece, and producer Teo Macero then cut them into segments and arranged them according to different themes. At the beginning and end of "Shhh/Peaceful", a long section consisting of two consecutive guitar and trumpet solos is inserted as if it were a theme. The entire track, carried by the same single bass note and the regular beat of the Charleston cymbal, is bathed in vivid blue hues of the keys. On the B-side, John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis successively introduce Joe Zawinul's theme ("In A Silent Way," stripped of all chords by Miles). Producer Teo Macero has added these three performances unaltered to the bottom of the page. Thirteen minutes into the track, the dark blue monochromatic tone between the introduction and coda suddenly explodes with blood-red intensity.
