The Miles Davis Quintet was formed in 1955 and is considered one of the finest formations in the history of jazz. Each of its members was an individual creative force that could easily take on a leadership role. "Philly Joe and Red Garland were the same age," Miles explained in his autobiography, "about three years older than me. Coltrane and I were born the same year, although I was a little older. Paul Chambers was a kid in the band, only twenty, but he played like he'd always been there. And so was Red; he gave me a light touch of Ahmad Jamal and a bit of Erroll Garner, along with his own bullshit in it all. That's how it happened." This quintet - like many other great bands made up of notables - didn't last long, despite Miles' best efforts to keep it together. Round About Midnight was Miles's first album for the label, which he named after a Thelonious Monk song that had brought him great success in Newport in 1955. All tracks were recorded in New York, A1 and A3 on September 10, 1956, B1-B3" on June 5, 1956, A2 on October 26, 1955.
