London band Years & Years release their second album Palo Santo on 6 June, which was launched with the single Sanctify, whose video has exceeded 6 million views on YouTube and was the top trending video at the time of release. The previous album Communion was the UK's number one selling album, reaching 1.5 million copies sold, receiving 5 BRIT Awards nominations, four singles going platinum and the band selling out Wembley with the album.Years & Years have always been regarded as a classic Britpop band. However, Palo Santo, for now symbolised by the single Sanctify, are changing their musical direction and overall vision. This is also evidenced by the diverse array of stars who contributed to the album. Kid Harpoon, Greg Kurstin, Julia Michaels, Steve Mac and Sarah Hudson to name a few. Frontman Olly Alexander fully embraces the role of pop star and opens up his inner self to listeners. Shrouded in the haze of tribalism, where the minority is the majority and everyone is always welcome, Palo Santo is a city on a distant planet where human beings are rare and therefore considered icons and revered by a society of robots. The record is part escapist fantasy, part social commentary. Pop is seen on the album as something futuristic, changing beyond recognition, just like the world. The band was inspired by the sci-fi or pop of Prince, David Bowie and Lady Gaga, which assaults multiple senses.
