Po vydání posledního alba "Favourite Worst Nightmare" v roce 2007 využili Nick, Matt, Jamie a Alex pauzu od psaní a nahrávání k tomu, aby si jako mladí a především úspěšní dvacátníci pořádně užili života. Se svým třetím albem měli angličtí indie rockoví hrdinové všelijaké plány. Nejenže si sami navrhli obal a bubeník Matt vytvořil nové logo. Deset písní také představuje kapelu jako sebevědomou a silnější než kdy dřív. "Skladba "Humbug" (pojmenovaná podle sloganu Dickensovy postavy Ebenezera Scrooga z Vánočního příběhu) ukazuje zcela nový přístup kapely k výběru písní a struktuře alba. "Na tomhle albu je něco," říká zpěvák Alex Turner, "co nás všechny fascinuje. Je to prostě úplně jako naše věc."

Arctic Monkeys released their third album Humbug on 25 August 2009. The album was produced by Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, who also contributed guitar and vocals. The album's sound has been described as a "darker, more psychedelic affair" than the band's previous work. Humbug debuted at number one in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. The first single from the album, "Crying Lightning", was released on 13 July 2009. The second single, "Cornerstone", was released on October 5, 2009. The third single, "My Propeller", was released on March 8, 2010. The album Humbug was generally well received by critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to reviews by mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 78, indicating a "generally favorable rating". NME writer James McMahon gave the album a nine out of ten, calling it "a record of breathtaking scope and ambition, confirming that the Monkeys are the world's most breathtakingly unpredictable band". Heather Phares, writer for AllMusic, awarded the album four and a half stars out of five.
